This book is concise and contains much useful information but is not adequate in and of itself to understand how to effectively design tube audio gear.

The first chapter, “What is a vacuum tube”, was quite understandable and included a bit more info than I found on the internet. This book speaks a whole other language. Writing this book was very difficult precisely because of the “tight rope walking” that the reviewer refers to. I was left with a need to take what the author was saying with a grain of salt, but this makes me pay attention to details and cross reference when I otherwise would not.
It covers subjects like safety, chassis construction and has a few projects in the back. Bruce goes into some detail regarding feedback and stability but without previous experience the reader will be somewhat at a loss to get results.

I had to balance providing enough information to be useful but yet not overwhelm the reader. From there, Bruce devotes chapters to simple gain stages, negative feedback, single stage feedback circuits, and multistage basics, each illustrated with numerous charts and diagrams.
On the other hand, if you’ve been using tubes for years, can read a schematic, and have assembled several amplifiers or preamplifiers, but never quite understood just what was going on in all that nice circuitry, then Bruce’s book can unveil all the mysteries of amplification which you have wondered about all this time.
It is a “teaching book,” a design reference, not a cookbook of recipies. You could spend four years in college studying that.

Introductory texts on any subject invariable walk the tightrope between overwhelming the reader with technical information or boring the reader with too much explanation and too little useful content.
