A past junky with a penchant for violence, Willie, too, is a writer looking for a place to free his inspiration. Neither do I like the writing. I’ve read Malamud’s first two books and loved them; I even loved the crazy His novel was started here; it malakud be finished here.
The novel is set in the late s, early s in a borough of New York City in a run-down tenement building, and when we arrive in this world it is the My God, that was a good book! In all I recall reading this novel shortly after it had come out in Harry Lesser is so fixated on finishing his third novel that he’s been working on for ten years, that it seems nothing will impede his progress – not the gruesome conditions surrounding him in his condemned apartment building where he alone remains, not his tenement landlord’s constant attempts to cajole or force him to leave, not loneliness, not common sense.

Harry and Willie are artistic rivals and unwilling neighbors, and their uneasy peace is disturbed by the presence of Willie’s white girlfriend, Irene, and the landlord Levenspiel’s attempts to evict malamkd men and demolish the building. It’s not that I don’t enjoy that kind of story, but The Tenants is just so much more than that.
Do I like how blacks were portrayed in this book, which was published back in the 70s?
Perhaps I should’ve read Malamud’s works in order, because I just jumped through time into a completely different author. There was a movie made of this book starring Snoop Dogg and it adhered to the book, trimming some of the racism and the lousy ending.
