Vinge used Hans Christian Andersen ‘s The Snow Queen as inspiration for this tale, the plot is packed with sci-fi goodness, and reminded me of so many other science fiction classics, it humbled me to realize most of them were written after this influential book.

Vnge really has aged pretty well and the influence of this book is evident in many of the books written today. I’ve not read the sequel, but I anticipate learning more about the consequences of their efforts in The Summer Queen.

To keep the uneasy peace, the government switches between Winter rule and Summer rule, under a matriarchal monarch. Joan Vinge appears to have no shortage of imagination. I love this book.
